I recently went on an offshore seabass trip and it was awesome. Now that seabass is closed I was considering going on a cod/bottom fishing trip. What is typically the best time to go? I dont want to go and catch seabass that we have to throw back! Let me know what youve experienced. Thanks!

I’ve done these trips in previous years. Generally, not many sea bass were pulled up. Lots of nice sized porgies. A few cod, maybe a few pollock as well.
A bonus this year, weakfish. The offshore boats are reporting decent weakfish catches. If you can handle the cold conditions, you should come home with plenty of meat.

Best time is very early spring for Cod and up north in Mass is where you want to be.. Check out Tuna.com at https://www.fishgloucester.com/ and if Dave is not available I’m sure he can hook you up with one of his buddies.

I've been getting some real nice cod at Shoprite and I didn't have to freeze my butt off.

Miss Montauk is running cod trips. Give Capt Jamie a call.

Montauk, and maybe a boat or two out of Shinnecock . I have seen in years past special mid winter Cod trips out of Brielle, but not sure if they do it any more.. REAL long ride out from central NJ,... Personally I would rather take the drive in the car than on a boat.. Cod are pretty hit and miss these days, and I would do some research as to how the fishing has been before I blew a couple hundred bucks, and endured a freezing day without any hits..

Cod isn't open in the Spring north of Cape Cod anymore. Plenty of haddock but cod are catch and release.

I am not hell-bent on catching cod, I just want to bend the rod. I will probably go on a "cod/porgy" trip out of Brielle. I just want to set my expectations realistically. Thanks for the info!
