spent the last two sundays running and gunning on stripers in the bay. All casting lures under diving birds and down to marks on the ff.... trying to dodge the guys trolling through the anarchy  best part is we kept seeing the trollers pull up dogfish hahahaha

just to be clear, trolling def has it's place, but come on guys... through the busting fish and diving birds in the bay???

sometimes ya just cant fix stupid... we see the same shit on the midshore tuna grounds. 100+ boats working together jigging and some idiot decides its a good idea to troll thru the melee... That's how we acquire new spreader bars--quick scoop with the boat hook and a snip with the shears! LOL

Its that way everywhere.. In my area in NY state, when people talk about fishing, they mean trolling, period.

I can understand as the lakes are huge, the fish are not bunched up most often, and its just the way its always been done.
Even when lakers are paving the bottom, lets say in early June, and are readily available in 30-40 FOW with a 1/2 oz jig, all most fishermen do is put the riggers out or get the wire/dipsey rods going, with 8 rods on the transom, and when one is hooked, skitter it along the top as the boat must be kept moving at a steady pace.. Not for me. Some fishermen I know won't even fish at all if they have to cast or fish with bait. They catch a LOT more fish than I do, but I dunno, seems more like work than sport tending to riggers, sliders, cheaters, planers, wire set ups...
To me its lunacy to troll through busting fish smashing through bait, and ready to jump on cast lures, but a LOT of guys do it and always have...

No matter how hard you try, stupid will never be able to be fixed. Common sense isn't so common anymore.

Great report as always Chris. You are truly a NJ fishing legend

Seriously? You Run and Gunners put down way more bites than trollers. In fact how many times do the trollers find the fish and then it’s instantly shut down by a seige of CCs

This may be true 25% of the time but not usually in my experience. We'd have a few boats successfully working on a school of breaking fish when the trollers come thru and break them up. Also, I'll never understand why guys will troll H/D wire rigs thru a school of breaking fish when they could cast a light/medium jig on spinning gear. It's more fun and usually more productive.

I've seen both sides of this... Everyone making nice and staying on the outskirts of the birds and all of sudden someone trolls right through the middle and other times you get jiggers who steams in at full speed, right into the middle and I think that's much worse.

One time there we were a few of us jigging some birds and everyone was pretty respectful staying on the edges. We had the birds up constantly and were catching pretty good making small slow moves to keep in position. Then out of no where this big Sporty shows up. Comes in at full steam, makes an abrupt stop right in the middle and 5 guys file out of the cabin like it's on fire and start casting around. Birds went down, we leave the area, birds form up again and the Sporty does the same thing... After this happens 4 or 5 times a few of us went over to explain the err of their ways and they left the area.

Anyhow, nice report Chrisper and glad you brought this up. Point is if everyone pays attention and doesn't get selfish or stupid, there's plenty of fish to go around and you can stay on them for a while.

Us and Them once again. I don't troll. It's like letting the boat hook the fish. I can understand trolling if the fish are scattered but if they are schooled up it's much more fun to jig them or cast a top water. There is just to many boats on the water these days! That is the real crux of the biscuit!

I could not agree more...

of course, like i said trolling has it's place for sure! some of the biggest stripers ive ever seen were caught trolling... this isn't me putting down trolling, but you can ask any of the best trollers right, they're not trolling through busting fish and diving birds in the bay.

and yes i've seen lure casters slam their boats right into the fish and break them up too.

see which way they're moving take a big loop around to help coral them better and let them come into you as you cast.
