We will be anchoring up this weekend looking for some blackfish. We have had some success in the past at sandy hook reef...but our last trip we didnt get many bites. We try to get right on top of the structure and find mid 30 foot depths...thats usually where we do best. Where are you guys fishing and are you getting bites? Thanks!

Blackfishing changes by the day. There is no right or wrong depth or right or wrong way to position over wrecks/structure. Just gotta dial em in as you fish, make adjustments accordingly, and have patience. This time of year start shallow and work your way deeper if need be. Good luck brotha.

I was out Tuesday on a charter, started shallow, about 30’ deep at 1st daylight, picked up 2 keeper tog with a flurry of short tog & sea biscuits . After it died out we moved on stopping at progressively deeper spots ending up at about 70’. Very slow day keeperwise, shallower water was better. ended the day with our 1 keeper tog each, but no sea bass. Still a very nice day fishing not catching….keepers that is. Hopefully it will get better as the water cools more, still pretty warm.

And sometimes they seem to just shut down for no apparent reason and it sucks for almost everyone no matter the depth... This fish are there, they just don't want to eat or commit to a bait...
I also feel like sometimes the fish want the jig and other times they want the rig so you need to mix up what you're offering them as well.
Trying different depths is a good plan as is trying different sides of the same piece, the up or down current side. But as I said above, sometimes it just plain sucks no matter where you are or what you do..
That's Blackfishing and a lot of times it's either feast or famine and no in between.

Yea, thats exactly what we do. We double anchor and make adjustments until the bite improves. Sometimes theyre just not chewing.....and its nerving! We dont focus on depth as much as we focus on getting right on top of the structure. We will see how we do tomorrow. Ill post a report.
