View Full Version : Thoughts on offshore outlook into November?

Looks like the last blow moved the midshore fish out, but the sparse satellite surface temps images I'm reviewing still show consistent 70+ degree water from West Atlantis all the way to the Hudson. The water to the east off the edge is HOT as of this morning showing temps above the mid 70s.

With the season slowly closing, what are your thoughts for the next few weeks? I've been checking out some sponsor and non-sponsor party boats as well as charter and private boat reports (when they can actually make it out), and it seems as if the bite has not been lights out. Folks are catching and it seems to vary trip to trip. I'm just looking for offshore insights here.

My father wants to do one more trip on the way back to NJ from Montauk where he keeps the boat spring through fall. I value your insights and perhaps, optimism?

Looking back at my late(Halloween) Oct and Nov trips, the longfin bite was fairly good to better than good---but that's with low-mid 60's water...prime Longfin temps(love the birds). caught last week with 68* but still mostly yellows...I really like to do the late season trips even though the add-ons are 24hrs, we're out there at the important time---dawn thru morning/ early PM..
Going out tomorrow, now I'm really turned on!!! Yes , we catch YFT's then also if the temp drop isn't quick & major.

The problem with November is the wind.

The problem with November is the wind.

Weather and good water are the limiting factors. I caught my pb longfin in 62 degree water. There's still lots of warm water North of us. There's also better temp breaks and smaller areas of warm water to fish later in the season. Has anyone fished south of the Tom's Canyon this year?

We fish the Atlantis canyons, block and hudson.
