Talk about a huge run of fish along the coast that doesn't get much fanfare. Didn't even think about it until I went into a fishing store near the entrance to Island Beach State Park and the guy behind the counter was gloating about all the fresh mullet they had in stock. Sure enough I opened the lid of the huge cooler and there they were, fresh caught. Funny how this run seems to pass us by like a warm summer breeze. One of my fondest mullet memories was on the party boat Jamaica when the mates cast netted quite a few before our departure for the canyon to go tuna fishing. On that trip we had Albacore busting surface off the stern but would not take a live-lined live mullet, amazing they turned up their noses at them ! Oh well, keep those mullet in mind when heading out, don't forget about these poor little fishes. :)

So they wont eat mullet? Or was that just a one-off instance?

Dunno, but they didn't want tasty live mullet that day.

Wondering if those offshore fish simply have never seen a Mullet, weren't used to them and were keyed on some other food source out in the canyon...As we know, sometimes fish will zone in on one food thats readily available where they are feeding at the time, to the exclusion of everything else.

Bob, that's what I'm thinking also but I hope it's not so. I have a few red mullet I'm gonna try using for tuna. They're not indigenous to the western Atlantic so I'm going to smear 'em with menhaden jell or sardine oil. Both yellows and birds like round scads but they look like a sardine. We shall see.
