Federal Funding Approved to Support NJ Fishing Communities

Eligible businesses can apply next week for the $9.5 million in federal funding New Jersey received

ON AUG 11, 2021

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) approved New Jersey’s spending plan for $9.5 million in federal aid for the state’s commercial and charter fishing industry. Congressman Frank Pallone (NJ-06) helped secure the funding as part of the omnibus and coronavirus relief bill Congress passed and was signed into law last December. This is the second round of federal funding Congress has allotted to help fishing communities during the coronavirus pandemic.

“I am pleased that another round of federal funding will be delivered to New Jersey’s fishing industry. This is another step in the right direction to ensure our region’s fishing businesses and their families get the assistance they need to withstand the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent economic storm,” Pallone said.

“This pandemic has been devasting to the men and women of our state’s fishing industry. That’s why I fought to secure this funding in Congress and am working to make sure these funds are released quickly to the people who need them.”

“NJDEP welcomes this new funding for New Jersey’s fishing communities and our critical seafood industries that have been impacted by the ongoing pandemic,” said New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn LaTourette. “These additional resources will both directly support the women and men of our commercial and recreational fishing sectors and bolster the industry as a whole. Not only a vital part of New Jersey’s economic engine, our fisherman and the communities they support remain a key part of who we are as a State.

New Jersey’s commercial fishing industry generates over $8 billion annually supporting over 50,000 jobs and has one of the largest saltwater recreational fishing industries in the United States.

Here is the answer to your question from the FAQs

Any direct payments that are received through this program will not need to be paid back.

The only exceptions are the following:

1. If the funding results in your business being made more than whole. In order to determine if you have been made more than whole you will compare your total 2020 Revenue, plus any assistance funding that you have received (excluding loans that need to be paid back) to your total 5-year average revenue from 2015 through 2019. You may exclude any years in which your business did not exist. If your total 2020 revenue is higher than your 5-year average revenue, you will need to return any Fisheries Assistance funding that made your 2020 revenue higher than your 5-year average. For any additional questions, please contact njfisheriesaid@dep.nj.gov.
2. If it is later discovered that falsified information was provided on an application that resulted in payment that should not have otherwise been received.

More handouts but no thanks. The recreational fishing industry doesn’t need any help other than getting rid of the self destructing regulations of the fluke. I guess no one realizes the party boats all went up 15-20$ and never went back down after everything open ended back up. The stock market is over inflated as are real estate values and jobs are paying more than ever however charter boats still pay 0 benefits to their help for the most part.I’d be willing to bet many have cash employees. I’m in the business and I pay benefits and don’t get tips. Once prices go up they never come back down very easily. If you can’t make it in this economy good luck in any economy. Let’s just get back to work and forget about this bs virus. Most recreational fishermen tout to be conservatives on this site but are still glad for the handouts. My saying for that was always “half assed Republicans”

I'm still waiting for the "Modern Fishing Act" to kick in!
