I braved the frigid 48 degree water to hunt for some blackfish off the beach before the season closure. I was very stupid to go alone but I survived. Broke the number 1 safety rule in spearfishing but there were no buddies to be found this day.
Dusted off my gear and gave it a shot...

Missed several BIG ones due to equipment failure and/or bad aim but I managed to take home a pair of 17 inch fish for dinner.

What struck me most was the lack of life on the substrate.. I have seen other underwater footage, where the bottom was crawling with blackfish, Not in the NY Bight so much but further south and out in eastern LI etc... Throw a jig down, and 20 tog surrounded it inspecting it intently from all sides and top and bottom... Maybe it was just poor visibility in this vid, but it just looked like that piece of bottom lacked much life..

Nice work on the video Doug. I know it takes a lot of time and effort to take the footage and edit it and you did a great job on both accounts....Well done!
