We left with only 19 fares at 11pm. We could have left earlier but one customer didn't show up or call in to cancel. We had following seas and it didn't get too bumpy until we got further offshore. Capt. Bob turned her into the wind to to set the anchors . We had to hold on until he got them set.
We started fishing in the dark. I had no jig love and switched to bait. First drop Porgie. Second drop Porgie. Switched up to 3/0 hooks and got my first keeper bass. The stern was red hot with singles and doubles coming over the rail. Saw Bill get a huge Ling. We were swarmed by Porgies and had to pick through them to get the bass. I began to regret not having 4/0 hooks.
As the sun rose I was up to 4 Sea bass and 3 of the bigger Porgies. Capt. Bob came down and fished with us between wiggles. He switched between a jig and two bait hooks above it and a high low Ling setup. We had a steady pick between the three of four wiggles. The Porgies were relentless. I stopped counting at 39. Too bad I don't eat Porgies. I might have caught a couple twice.
The current/wind situation caused Capt. Bob to pull both anchors and just put one out. I just needed one Bass for my limit when the boat swung. As I fed out line and touched bottom I got bit. It didn't fight like a Bass or Porgie. It took line a couple of times and swam out from under the boat. It was a 5-5 1/2lb. Weakfish.
When three horns sounded my final score was 3 Bluefish , 2 small Dogfish, 1 Cunner, 15 Sea Bass, way too many Porgies, and my pb Weakfish. I only retained 3 Porgies, SEA BASS limit, and the Weakfish. Capt. Bob limited on Sea bass and kept 10 Porgies.
Other than parts of the ride in and out and the cold wind it was a good trip. Most people had limits or close to limits on the Sea bass. There were some Ling, a Purple Hake, a couple dozen Bluefish, my Weakfish, and all the Porgies you could want.
I would like to thank Capt. Bob for sailing short and putting us on fish. Stan and John for keeping the deck in order. It was so much fun fishing with Capt. Bob. We don't get to do it enough. I had so much fun I might put up with the cold again next week.
