I’m sorry I should’ve posted a little bit earlier, we had a slow day to start with, shorts , and not too many keepers, we moved around and didn’t find too much , and then we took a chance and road further offshore, the problem with where we were fishing in recent days, as a matter fact through out October , and November there was load of dogfish there . The biggest kind of dog fish , Hungry dogs fish, ferocious dog fish , they would not let you get started blackfishing , Today they were not there . We fished about two hours with only one or two dogfish . We started picking at blackfish, first short then keepers , we wound up with some nice fish . I myself , fished for about 45 minutes at the end of the day, i had three keepers ,and about eight shorts, none of the fish were really big keepers, but keepers all the same, and almost all the shorts I had were nearly keepers. The action was very good. But mostly because I was fishing properly, I was using small green crabs, cut in half with 3/0 hooks , and floral carbon leader. Not 5/0 hooks 60 pound test leader , Bright red , bright yellow , or bright orange jigs , whole White Legers the size of which, anybody from deadliest catch would be proud to put it on the dock. The fishing is fragile The bite is not ferocious, so there’s no reason to believe that any of these tactics would work. When people are i Informed of these facts they are reluctant to listen to you, I am sure every other charter , and party boat captain experiences this, most any of these captains or Deck Hand given a rod & reel Would put most of the fares to shame, they do it every day, and all of them are there trying to help, and many people do not take the advice. You have to remember that Their goal , is to catch you fish , they make me a living pleasing their customers. You have to understand that there’s no set way of fishing for anything , you have to cater to the conditions that you have at hand. Anyway we’re on a full moon, and the dogfish have seem to subside , there is a good deal of life in water, this is encouraging. Great honest report as usual .
Fishing the same areas as you, we had a simaler day but bright yellow jigs produced all the keeps we had . Nothing huge 16/17” fish .
Rig fishing was producing WAY more bites but Shorts were over 10/1 for us .
IMO the swell from mid week still has bigger fish up off the pieces .
While weather temp wise was incredible, 4 foot long period swell just doesn’t make fishing easy ...
Divers are saying the bottom temps are considerably warmer than top temps , which makes no sense with all the south upwelling we have had .
Hard to believe how bad the dogfish are , and the commercial guys have been catching thousands a pounds a day of them , yet seems no dent in them at all ..
Seems we can’t get the needed few days to let the ocean lay down , the start of the new week again looks nasty .
