Hey guys w/ our new world of virtual school on wed we are done early, so might as well bring the kid out fishing. What's my best bet for my 8 yr old to bend a rod later today? Don't think he has the focus/skill for black fish if they are even there right now, would throwing small ava's or metal be the best bet or drowning some clams? I live in shark river hills so it's a stones throw for me to get there, or is there better action on the manasquan inlet? Not opposed to taking a cruise down there either! Thanks for any

I've not fished either inlet in quite some time so I'll let others chime it here as to what is biting.
What I can tell you is this...The Avon side of the Shark river inlet inside the ocean bridge or the Point Pleasant side of the Manasquan not on but before the Jetty is probably the safest place for an 8 year old.
The current screams in either inlet during a moving tide so if you plan to fish bait, you'll need a very heavy pyramid sinker to keep it in place and keep it from rolling. Probably best to fish with bait an hour before to an hour after slack tide.
As far a casting, I would be throwing A17 diamond jigs if the current isn't ripping too much, A27 if it's ripping since they'll sink better.
Starting to hear of some Bluefish being caught inshore so that might be an opportunity.
Good luck!

If there were ever a time to break him into blackfishing now is the time at the manasquan inlet... I have not been there in a few weeks, but when I was there 3 anglers caught 40 or so fish in a couple of hours. We fished just where the manmade cement bulkhead meets the natural rocks...I would suggest fishing an hour on either side of a high tide or low tide.... Good luck & tight lines.

Thanks for the information we dead sticked some clams while we both cast some metal. No takers on the metal, 2 FUGLY sea robins on the clam strips. We only fished a little more than an hour, he managed to donate 2 rigs and weights to the bottom. Would I be better off next time w/ rounded edge sinkers? both rigs lost were 4 oz pyramids.

You're gonna donate tackle no matter what weight you use in the inlet.
Terminal tackle is never owned. Its merely leased :D

Never use pyramid sinkers where there is structure... Better off saving the pyramids for the beach and use bank sinkers where there is structure... Regardless, as previously mentioned you are going to lose lead, but you should cut down on the amount you lose.

There are stripers in the surf for sure. Ava's working, Yozuri Hydro Minnow in bone color, Daiwa SP bone color - herrings being caught too from the sand. No need to get on a jetty- we catch more fish next to them!
