Not sure what your favorite bait is, in Maine there is one beach that anyone can dig hen aka surf clams. No license needed. No residency requirements. It’s pine point beach in Scarborough. Other towns have regulations, the only thing you need to do in Scarborough is call the hotline to make sure there is no poison or sewage run off.

Can you dig without a license?

You need to purchase a separate license to harvest Clams in NJ.

Every type of clam you need a license? That’s unfortunate, it’s pretty good bait, and we make chowder with surf clams.

I was approached by a Ranger on the beach at Sandy Hook once and asked what type of bait I was using. I said clams. She asked if I dug them up in the surf. I said no, they were salted clams from a bait shop. She asked me to show her the container. I did. They enforce the rules at Sandy Hook pretty strictly.

I was fishing with live surf clams there that I bought from a tackle shop and the ranger told me the next time I need to carry the receipt with me.

Guess that rules out using clams for bait at the nude beach!
