my cousin Jose Murray sailed on a nsb out of PPb yesterday & said fishing was great. He said nonstop sea bass action but loads & loads of 12-12.4inch fish that had to go back. Also some scary big porgys. My cousin Jose had 21k sea bass (orl), & the charter ended with a limit of sea bass & 43 jumbo chops & 2 winter flounder.

Is a porgy good table fare? Sea bass is the best fish I’ve ever eaten, they seldom make it into Maine.

meh.. They are ok, NOT in the same league as sea bass, tog, ling/hake,cod, whiting, haddock or any of the flat fish..
They have considerable dark meat for some reason, unlike many other bottom feeders and are fairly strong compared to other bottom dwelling fish.. I eat them, but am not crazy about them, and actually would probably prefer eating a 1 pound Bluefish over a 1 pound Scup. Thats just my opinion, lots of guys love them and will take and eat as many as they are allowed..
I always liked to eat the small ones in the bays and rivers[we used to call them "sand porgies'] a lot more than the bigger ones over say 10 or 12 inches.. Not as strong tasting as their big brothers, but they can no longer be kept...
Try a few Porgies and see what you yourself think.. Some love them, some refuse to eat them at all, and many others are like me- meh, take them or leave them... LOVE to catch them however, furious fighters!. bob

As my screen name suggests, I’m a porgy aficionado. Love to catch them on light tackle. They put up a good fight for the size. Love to eat them whole...and fried. The only issue is cleaning them. Millions of tough scales. They take twice as long as sea bass to scale. Sea bass I love whole...and broiled. A little butter, garlic, pepper and oregano in the cavity. Kosher salt and olive oil on the skin. That’s good eats.
