This morning two kayaks were on the Shrewsbury half of an hour before sunrise. No lights. Could have had serious injuries upon collision. Are kayaks required to have some kind of illumination between sunset and sunrise?

Every vessel is required. It's to be seen. Unpowered smaller vessels can use a flashlight, lantern, or even cell phone light. Anything to make them visible. So they dont get run over.

AND a sound producing device. Likely that was missing too.

Ignorance gets people killed.

Took a ride 2 nights ago to give the boat a run at dark, came back to AH harbor and damn near split a Kayak and 2 guys in a 10 ft Jon boat in half, no lights, no headlamps and even worse no life jackets. I get it we all have a right to be on the water but had my bow lights, anchor, and all my cockpit lights lit up and they didn't care one bit. Glad it was a safe story but god damn wear a life jacket, and get a cheap flashlight or a headlamp. Your flag is not visible at night.

To compound the problem, an attorney will immediately hear of the accident, contact the kayaker(s), take the case on a contingency basis meaning no cash out of pocket to the idiot kayaker and they'll be a lawsuit against the boater regardless of whose at fault. In most cases the insurance companies settles to avoid prolonged and excessive legal expense or potentially an adverse judgment. The judicial system and ambulance chaser attorneys are as much to blame for this behavior as the idiots are who think they can go out on the water at night in stealth mode and assume no responsibility for their actions.
