Shed the restraints at 8am and headed for a spot between triple wrecks and the chicken canyon. Set up a drift in 69* blue, clear water. Fairly quick as seas were 6-7' with a stiff 12-15 breeze. First fish in at 1PM and then 1-2 more boated at fairly regular intervals. All these fish were big YFT's, 50-75#. Nothing happening during the night on the hook nor drifting. Ran back to our start point on Wed with seas almost flat 1-2' with the occasional leftover 4'er and almost no breeze for a glassy sea surface. A slow but steady pick of more big Y's with a couple of free swimming Mahi-mahi--8-10# and a couple of big False Albies. Only 2 blue sharks, 1 @ night, 1 during the day. Wednesday had bright, sun-filled skies, Thursday gave us a heavy overcast sky. Had a false killer whale make an appearance Thursday.
Tuna totals: 32 YFT and had either our chunks or sand eels in their stomachs. Finally, bloody decks. Oh yea, on this trip, light was not right; these fish would chaff through 40# test leaders(me-1 and others also). They weren't line shy, boated mine on 60# and most others had 80#. Hopefully they'll still be around for the duration. No longfin yet but think they hang in the canyons--correct me if I'm wrong. Can't wait for next week.
Kudos to Capt. Bob and the crew, Nico, Walt, Steve and John for their professional handling of everything on board.

Great report. A false killer whale is a species of whale. Really a toothed dolphin I believe

Glad you got out. What was the hot bait? Did anyone drop down for swords? Any squid around? Hope you didn't run out of vacuum bags.

Had some squid jigged plus a flat of frozen. Sardines also but bait of choice was butters, halves, chunk-size or larger & whole. Got my runoffs on my Asian market Round Scads--resembles a sardine. No swords, we tried. I believe those false killers are called Menke but don't know for sure. Got an order of vac bags but didn't get em yet. Got enough for now. Pete, will we see you Wednesday?

The false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) is a species of oceanic dolphin that is the only extant representative of the genus Pseudorca. It is found in oceans worldwide but mainly frequents tropical regions. It was first described in 1846 as a species of porpoise based on a skull, which was revised when the first carcasses were observed in 1861. The name "false killer whale" comes from the similar skull characteristics to the killer whale (Orcinus orca).
The false killer whale reaches a maximum length of 6 m (20 ft), though size can vary around the world. It is highly sociable, known to form pods of up to 500 members, and can also form pods with other dolphin species, such as bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Further, it can form close bonds with other species, as well as partake in sexual (including both heterosexual and homosexual) interactions with them. Conversely, the false killer whale has also been known to feed on other dolphins, though it typically eats squid and fish. It is a deep-diving dolphin, with a maximum recorded depth of 927.5 m (3,043 ft); its maximum speed is around 29 km/h (18 mph).
The false killer whale easily adapts to captivity and is kept in several aquariums around the world, though its aggression towards other dolphins makes it less desirable. It is threatened by fishing operations, as it can become entangled in fishing gear. It is drive hunted in some Japanese villages. The false killer whale has a tendency to mass strand given its highly social nature, with the largest stranding consisting of 805 beached at Mar del Plata, Argentina. Most of what is known of this species comes from examining stranded individuals.

Wow wow frugal fisherman you got too much time on your hands I'm hoping that Captain readjust the time so we can have better daytime fishing instead of sitting there overnight catching nothing

Nate, it's not normally a daytime chunk bite this time of year. The 36 hour trip has both dusk and dawn magic times. This is the first tuna trip for the Gambler this season. I trust the Captains judgement. The night bite could go off tonight. It's fishing.

If they're going to be fishing the spot east of triples it's been a daytime bite for the past six to seven weeks nothing at night so if that's where they're going they should readjust for the daytime bite

Pedro you know the night bite hasn't happened in the past 8 years so they're finally biting during the day why wouldn't they adjust their times to fish more during the day on a 24-hour trip

Nate, I looked at some other big boat schedules and their 24 hour trips all leave around the same time. The Gambler has 2 in Nov. leaving at 10:00 pm. I'm sure that they could adjust if they saw merit in it. I think that when the sadness move that bite will go further offshore/south.
