Jason and I took his boat out today with the game plan to target inshore pelagic/speedsters (and maybe just maybe a find a bluefin or two) then hit the reef for some fluke. Had some good intel on an area 8-10 miles offshore that produced yesterday. Water quality/clarity was excellent. Had very good reading upon arriving on the grounds but after 45 minutes of trolling without a knockdown we decided to try jigging on some readings. Jason had already jigged up 2 sea robins before I even had a hit. Wasn’t long before I hear him mumble that he just missed one, he dropped his jig down a few feet and after a few cranks of the reel he came tight. Fish didn’t fight hard until it was 25 feet away then it out on the afterburners. After a spirited fight, he had the fish boat side. At first we thought it was a very big spanish mackerel but after getting on deck we realized it was a king mackerel (taped out to just over 29”s and weighed just over #6). After some high fiving, we made a few more drops that produced a few #3 bluefish and some chub mackerel. Decided to hit a lump to the south. Once again we put out the trolling gear. Had our first knockdown within 10 minutes, a nice false albacore. Stayed in the same general vicinity working around, atop and off the lump the rest of the morning. Ended up going 10 for 12 on false albacore (all in the #8-10 class) in addition to another small bluefish and chub mackerel. With the south wind starting to come up and dark clouds forming to the west, we bypassed fluking and headed to the barn.
