Apologize if someone already posted this...

"None of the kayakers were wearing life jackets, said the Coast Guard." Sad, unnecessary. The water is still very cold.

I was listening to this unfold on the boat on Saturday. A boater who was assisting (I think he picked up one of the kayakers) said they were at the #18 buoy.

Thats terrible. But, if they don't have the life jackets on, they take their chances that low in the water. Saw a few out there on Sunday morning without flags. In the AM it was difficult to make them out at a moderate distance.

Terrible news and I hate to have to say things like this about someone who this happened to, but these are the types of people who will get kayak fishing shut down for the rest of us who do it the right way. Anyone who has been out this time of year before knows the 120 rule (combined water and air temps). There's no way in hell someone who regularly kayak fishes goes out 1) without a life jacket 2) without a dry suit or other safety gear in these water temps and 3) in only a bathing suit at this time of year.

Unfortunate on all fronts.

A real boat would work a lot better too in open water. ALL THREE of these tippy and overpriced plastic boats OVERTURNED. Sad.

I think the article said between staten island and perth amboy.

The reach? Challenging place to paddle between current and giant cargo ships.

That could also be the Arthur Kill river and lots of current and big ships there too..
