View Full Version : Fish Peddler 5/18 Weakie

I have chosen a new name for my kayak.... The Fish Peddler... since it's one of the Hobie Mirage peddle drive models.
Anyhow, hit the hook around noon. I parked in the 2nd lot and launched in the bay, just outside the mouth of the Navesink. I trolled around for a couple of hours catching about 1/2 a dozen bluefish to 7 lbs, then I decided to try the Highlands side of the bay there so I started peddling over there and wham! My first weakfish. I've seen weakfish before, but never this size. I saw one that was 12# once but this one looked bigger. I took it to Atlantic Highlands Bait & Tackle and they weighed it in at 15# 11oz. It was about 35". Not bad for a first weakie on only my third trip on a kayak :)
I caught it on a Kayak Carl's trolling tube, tipped with a piece of Gulp! Sandworm.

Get ready for fluke on the YAK!!!
I'll be out Sat and Mon. Location depends on the conditions.
Most likely a channel edge in Raritan looking for a few keeper fluke.

Absolutely, that fish could easily win the weakfish category. I think the IGFA world record is 19lbs.

Congrats on that beauty
Congratulations on that catch! That's a memory to keep with you forever. The weakfish is becoming elusive and to hook the one that you did is an accomplishment!

Jon, Nice fish.
Thats bigger than any of have seen in real life. How you ever got that intop the yak without a net is unreal.
The freeking NAMBLA line combined with the Crogs and the drysuit should be illegal. Photoshop it and put Avid's head on it.

I think a shot of you in that lime green one piece, your manly choice of headgear and those white crocks would def make the cover of the Fisherman for sure.... :p
Nice fish Jon...
I think Mark let your secret out of the bag though, I see stinger hook holes all around the anal fin of that beast....snag and bag baby!!;)

Yes, it's all priceless, but that's what makes this group so fun!
The fish did get a little beat up because I took a piece of nylon cord and a cabiner and tied him to the side. He kept whacking my rudder (things that sound dirty, but aren't) on the way back in.
I guess I do have a wide array of fishing couture. But form follows function... I'm trying to scare the fish into the boat!
I'm out of commission on early a.m. boats for another month due to some personal issues. That's why I got the kayak. I'll be fluking on the Angler in another month. In the meantime, please save some for me!

NICE!!!!. Quite the fish indeed. Where do you go from there? My very first weakie was a 12 lb tide runner in the Elberone Surff. Trout colored Bomber lined with black electrical tape. Caught a 6lb

Jon,
It appears that you are going to have to show me the ropes instead of it being the other way around. WHAT A FISH!!! Congrats and lets chase some fluke when I get back from memorial day weekend.

Excellent, Congratulations!!!!!!! That is one beautiful fish. Good thing you got photos. They are best eaten right away. I have found them to be excellent when fresh but not quite as good when frozen for any length of time. The flesh has some fat which contributes to a pleasant juiciness when fresh but also is cause for some fishy flavor when not-so-fresh. Forgive me if I rained on your parade. Excellent catch and I hope that it is just one of many more to come!!!!!
