Interesting but nothing really new.. They are big aggressive beautiful game fish that are highly desirable in close and many many fishermen want to catch them. Its that simple.. Years back when there were few or no stripers it was not that big a deal.. In spring there were flounder, Mackerel, Whiting and Ling, not to mention Blackfish which not that many people even fished for. In fall there were masses of Blues, and even some big Tiderunner Weaks for those that knew when where and how. Stripers really weren't missed all that much.

Nowadays tog are extremely regulated, Flounder, Whiting,Inshore Ling, and Macks are scarce or missing, Weaks are non existent and whats left to fish for?..
A striper population that was indeed resurgent for several years.
However, Stripers and they way they live and breed are not a good fish species to bear the brunt of the massive pressure they are now under..
their spawning grounds are well known, and they get hammered on their way there.. Their fall migrations are well known, and the day they arrive in an area its known instantly, and they are bombarded with thousands of lures and baited hooks day and night . Unlike species like say Porgies, Sea Bass, Fluke, Stripers are usually within reach of some angler some where on the East coast, as they just don't stray too far from the shorelines.

They simply can't sustain the pressure they are subjected to.. i don't know the answer, and I have more questions than answers anyway..
I dunno, barbless hooks? catch and release only?
then what do party and charter captains do? starve?.. thats not a good option either..

I have noticed something past few years..
When big stripers start to blitz and the pics of masses of monster stripers on party boats start to show up, its almost as if the stripers shut off pretty quickly.. Crazy bite for a few days and then when the masses of boats descend on them, they seem to know something is up.. Maybe when they see their school mates in distress and struggling with a shiny object hanging out of their mouths a bunch of times they wise up.. It just seems the fishing is wild for a short time and then once the fleet gets ridiculous, the "jig bite" goes down and then only trollers that get away from the fleet can get a few, followed by eel fishermen fishing at night and early morning..

I just have a bad feeling some very tough restrictions are coming soon..

The pictures of huge bloody breeders by the hundreds being hoisted up by smiling fishermen might get a few more guys on the boats, but its not a great look to those that have the power to shut it down.

When ever you see an official report or document with the word "overfished" in it, watch out.... bob

Yup. But guys on this page think it's ok to fish for them in illegal water and when someone (me) makes a post about it , it gets deleted. Unreal.

Nothing is shocking anymore in 2019. Guys on this forum, so-called sportsmen, openly encouraging people to turn a blind eye to illegal fishing.

Understood, but "illegal" fishing is not the main problem.. Its the same old same old.. Too many fishermen targeting and eating too few fish, and the prime targets are invariably the big breeders.. I am not smart enough to know the answer to these problems, but if the stripers go down again, there just isn't much left for anglers to target for several months of each year... bob

The reason your post was deleted is because it went bad and was only going to cause more
drama.

I dunno fellas. Ever watch an Omega boat do its thing in the Chesapeake?

What 500 charterboats, party boats, and recreational fishermen, from the Manasquan to the Varrazzano can do to the striper&bunker populations in a long Saturday, under the best weather conditions of the year, doesn't begin to compare to what a purse-seine industrial fishing vessel does in a good hour. But they're represented by lobbyists, so as night must follow day....

Where are examples of anyone "encouraging" people to turn a bling eye?
Everyone on here knows how far off the beach 3 miles is. Other boats want to fish further off the beach for other species. So a few people insist they are fishing for Stripers. "I know what they are fishing for" is a great quote! I wonder how many on here throw back a dead Fluke after they catch one that is larger? Yes siree, how many keep Fluke or shuffle the deck when they think no one is watching?;)
REMEMBER! Dead fish don't swim!

Plenty of "mind your own business" posts in that thread, couldn't clip them out bc entire thread was deleted.

And yeah ok, everyone out 3.5 miles is trolling for bluefin. Whatever floats your boat bogan.

With all due respect, and believe me i am NOT trying to be a smart ass, but thats exactly what we all said about Flounder/Weaks/Mackerel/Whiting/Blues/ Blackfish/Cod.... taking the large prolific spawners out by the thousands in the NY Bight and eating them every spring and fall is NOT good fishery management long term, and there will certainly be a lack of stripers, at least big ones if it continues unabated... bob
