Left at 7 Thursday morning on a 30 hour tuna/mahi trip. Had a very comfortable ride out. Started off pot hopping for some mahi found some that were willing to eat. Somewhere around the 4th or 5th pot the first yellowfin came into the boat on a jig. The crew started chunking which was a great decision. That first tuna turned into a full blown middle of the day chunk bite. By the time it was over around 6 there were 54 tuna in the boat from 25 to 60 pounds most in small chunks with 40 pound fluorocarbon leader. Stayed in the chunk all night. Slow all night except for many blue sharks and 2 150 to 200 swords. Getting close to first light two very large swordfish were hooked. First one breached 3 times within 50 feet of the boat and was massive and unfortunately lost. Second was also very large and after an hour long fight the #40 leader couldn’t hold up anymore. Sad to see that happen. Back on the chunk for a few more hours with no love.
Thanks to the captains and crew for a great trip. Back at the dock around 230

I was on this trip too. I got three Mahi, two 30# YFT and one 50# LFT. Lost two YFT pulling the hook on one and knot broke on the other. No more tuna after that. Caught the first one flatlining a frozen squid within 3 minutes on 40# floro. Couldn't get another bite for a while and watching everyone else getting bites. I then buried my hook in a butterfish and starting getting bites again. Sometimes within minutes, sometimes with a lot of line out. All flatlined. Caught squid all night on top with a yozuri glow jig and a 1/4 ounce egg sinker in front of it but unfortunately the morning bite never happened. If it was a 24hr trip, it would have sucked

Nice fishing with you guys on that trip. It was definitely one to remember. Most insane chunk bite in the last couple years. Got two on bait before I had to switch over and get another on the jig. Water was still plenty warm and clear. Beer30, that was a pig of a longfin you got. Surprised there weren’t more of them, which can only make me assume there’s still more time left to this season as more move in.

On a side note, that second lost sword on 40 leader was hooked right at false dawn. The angler and crew caught the fish expertly, but I’d bet we would’ve had a shot at more fish during first light if that fish wasn’t being fought...
