My new buddy, Brant, and I headed out saturday in search of whatever would bite. we started off wondering around not seeing much happening and made a few long runs. We jigged a few good bottom marks only to be molested by spiney dogfish non-stop. Then we found some bird life with schoolies under it and played with them for a bit before moving on to look for bigger fish.
We were probably 1 or 2 moves away from switching over to give tog fishing a go and we started seeing good bunker pods. It didn't appear that there were any fish feeding on them but we fished it anyway. Nothing was happening at first but then out of no where, Brant gets hammered!
From that point at 11:30 til around 2:30 it was game on! I've never seen anything like this...almost every fish was over 38" with at least half of them being over 44" and up to almost 48"! A few years back we got them a few times kayaking like this but they weren't this big. It was ridiculous! I was just waiting for one of them to be 50", but i didn't happen. Still busted my PB with an almost 48" probably close to 45lbs cow.
Here's just my half of the pictures of some of the bigger fish and a 'small/regular' sized one haha. all were released except for one smaller one that had it's gills torn up by the lure pretty bad. I headed back out with John the next day and there wasn't a bunker to be found and all we caught were a few schoolie stripers
I think i'll just retire from striper fishing now, go out on a high note hahaha. tog time!
