Looking to head up to Newport RI next weekend and was looking for any thoughts on either fishing from the shore (and a good tackle shop near by) or a charter or party boat recommendation. Would be for me and my two sons (8 and 10).
Any thoughts would be hugely appreciated.

Sea bass is 7 fish at 15 inches. There are lots of party boats and charter boat in the area of Point Judith, which is about 45 minutes away. One 6-pack in Newport is highly recommended. Tog (3 fish) is also open but I don't know whether your boys are up for that.

Drive another 3 hours north to Seabrook NH and fish on one of the Eastman's vessels, open boat. They're a sponsor here.....:)

My brother lives there. He said talk to the guys at Saltwater Edge Shop and they will help you out. He's been fishing Brenton Point and Sachuest. Lots of scup around and early morning or evening Bass, Blues, some Fluke and False Albies. Small metal, small bucktails with gulp and SP Minnows are all he uses. Good Luck

Agreed. Those guys are dialed into the South County scene.

Saltwater Edge is the place to call but do it before you go. Personally I would ask them about a private charter since you have kids (8 and 10). You may need to reserve that in advance.
I lived there for 10 years and if you are new to the area there are not a lot of easily accessible areas from shore that are reliable - particularly for kids.
If the cost of a charter is prohibitive, option 2 would be Point Judith party boat fleet about 45 minutes away like another post suggested.
Good luck

Frances Fleet & Seven B's are running party boat sea bass & porgy trips at now. They're the closest open boats that I know of in that area.
