On my lunch break and enjoying the view, when this gentleman starts to fish. Signs clearly post no fishing but I guess that doesn't mean him. On top of it he catches a 2ft ell. Told him no fishing, but he didn't understand me

Should tell him first you're conducting a marketing study and if he participates he'll receive $250. That should confirm he understands English. Then tell him no fishing and F&G are on their way.

Video is your best friend when confronting law breakers. They usually run like cockroaches when the lights come on, and if they don't it is always nice to post online to show law enforcement what is going on.

He was performing a shoreline ecological engineering project which involved collection of river bottom samples to determine the effects of sedimentary, residue of man-made waste on tidal marine organisms. He was NOT fishing! Besides........he was eeling and not fishing.
I'm sure that the no fishing signs were illegally posted at a height or size that would not meet required regulatory standards. Besides that, the signs were not properly translated into the man's native language and there was no listing of the code number or statute on the sign, making any prosecution or enforcement impossible. But a conservation officer could cite him for not having a saltwater registration or any number of other fish and wildlife regulations.
This might make an interesting topic for another thread.

Not really
I guess I was writing with a stream of consciousness thinking about the effects fish and game officers have on the adherence to saltwater fishing regulations.

i wonder if the no fishing sign was fish and game, or did it get there because of the people in million dollar condos who don't want to smell bait....
or think they own the river

I was thinking the same thing... However as you know, people are typically their own worst enemies, and there are often valid reasons why fishermen get shut out.. Lots of slobs out there that think nothing of leaving garbage and beer cans all over the place,,, bob

Take out another rod and fish right next to him. His English and vocabulary will get very colorful I'm sure

There is a website for the Hudson River Waterfront Conservancy. I don't see anything about not fishing anywhere. Fish on, check with the local PD but then Fish on!

I also thought who was the authority that posted the sign. Do they even have the authority? For a fishing site the comments above are pretty negative about someone just trying to fish. I don’t understand the negativity. Why are people even bringing up the notion that this fisherman was throwing around beer cans and bait. Most people who fish and hunt are strong Stewart’s of nature regardless of their native language. As long as he isn’t taking species he shouldn’t or out of season, what’s so wrong.

"Stewart’s of nature "
Stewarts makes a very lovely root beer,
A "steward" is a person that can be entrusted to care for things we value greatly such as our environment, children, financial resources etc.
I agree with your post actually.. We need fewer "no fishing" signs in the modern age, NOT more of them... bob

That's NOT F&G. It's some guy not wanting you fishing on his property.
It's NOT illegal to fish the Hudson.
Should tell him first you're conducting a marketing study and if he participates he'll receive $250. That should confirm he understands English. Then tell him no fishing and F&G are on their way.
