Not sure about crab bait, but the larger ones make great table fare. Give em a try.

My buddy grilled some of the big ones - skin on from our last trip.
He said they tasted as good or better than striped bass.

I don't see why they wouldn't work.. crabs aren't all that picky usually, although same bait scents will carry a lot further [Bunker, Mackerel, Bluefish heads and racks..}, due to oil content..

No one uses it for crabs really , but IMHO squid is the best bait out there..

years ago , when I was a kid, a friends dad asked us to keep all the sunnies we caught at a pond... They wanted to use them for crab bait in the Shrewsbury.. I laughed at them like a punk 12 year old would, saying crabs wouldn't touch them.. They came back with bushels full all on dead sunnies.. So yeah, if you have a source of sea robins, give them a try, I am sure you'll get some crabs... bob

Eat the Bird and use the rack as bait. If your crabbing in the right area where the crabs are you will catch them, they will eat almost anything.

Not optimal, but SR will catch crabs. An old timer once told me when using a fish with the head to remove the eyes. Maybe not to spook the crabs ?

Usually you want oily. They are not great in that area,

Crab are bottom scavengers and will eat almost anything. Why do you think people use cheap chicken pieces. Price drives that bait. the cheaper the better. Blue fish work, bunker obviously, mackerel, even killies I've used over the years.

They make excellent fish cakes.
