I recently moved to Little Egg Harbor from north Jersey,I primarily fished and boated in the Raritan Bay , the Hook, the rocks etc. I have been out 4 times down here from Great Bay Marina, a long dangerous ride out to the ocean, it is like an obstetrical course even with a chart plotter. Any help with the best places in near by areas out to the ocean. Once in the ocean got skunked all 4 times with the exception of some 1-2lb Blues and a handful of short Fluke and a variety of garbage fish, even went to Little Egg Reef yesterday. Any help on where to go to put some fish in the boat. Thanks in advanced.

I'm surprised your tackle/bait shop does not have some general Intel to give. happy customer is a repeat customer.

Have you tried them? They do want you back.

Also visit the PB docks and talk to people there when they come back in.

I made a similar move many years ago.. Moved from Union Beach a few blocks from the raritan bay, to forked river.. Try as i might to learn barnegat Bay and Great Bay, I found that the fishing was simply not nearly as good.. Too much shallow, sand bottom unproductive water for my taste in both bays, as well as the nearshore ocean waters.. Not as much structure down there such as mussel beds, broken rocky bottom, deep channels etc

I started towing more to Shark River and fishing the ocean from there instead of Barnegat.. there are guys that do fine in both Barnegat bay and Great bay, but you will not find near as much production as there is in raritan bay. They are very different bodies of water... I would hit the tackle shops hard, and get to know some of the locals that know how, when and where.. I never really could so i simply went to areas that i knew produced.. bob

Why not tow up to Manasquan or Shark rivers and do some of your fishing there?.. Its only a 45 minute tow to Shark River, and even less to manasquan.. There's some good fishing south of your area as well, but again, you would need to start a dialog with the locals as well as well regarded bait/tackle shops.. they want your business, and know that if they shoot straight and help out, you'll be back.. You'll get some help here I imagine as well.. I fished south of barnegat for years, but simply could never come close to the same success I had from Shark River northward, so I simply fished both areas, stayed more local when I had less time...... bob

real easy to get hopelessly lost without GPS /chartplotter in those myriad tidal creeks near tuckerton.. At least that was the way it used to be.. haven't been there in decades.. i dunno, i liked it there , but the fishing was meh compared to what I was used to, and the green heads were just incredibly fierce.. i recall clouds of them down there.. brutal in the summer... bob

We grew up in Middlesex County and I learned all my fishing in the fabulous Sandy Hook/Raritan/ Shrewsbury waters back in the late 60's/early 70's. And I sure do miss that area and I plan to start trailering up there.
Bought in Mystic in 2000 and moved here permanently right before the market crash. WOW! This was a whole new world of boating/fishing and greenheads. An old salt told me at the Sewaren Marina that it's a whole different way of fishing down here. I couldn't agree more. I can help you with the waters for navigation but there isnt a whole lot of deep water channels like Raritan. And if its a West wind and your inside the bay, it can get quite aggravating with the flies, at least for me. My experience has led me that except for the reefs out here, this ocean floor is flat and dead. Maybe a few pieces of wreckage if you can find them, otherwise it's LER,GSS or GSN or run South and hit AC reef. Its a ride no matter what. There are areas around the stinkhouse and those islands that hold fish, but you better watch your tides, have an outboard and somewhat of a shallow draft boat. Feel free to call/text me. My cell 908-217-2345. I'll be glad to help you out any way I can. Matt
