With the annual striped bass migration in full force, late March and early April has proven to be very busy for District 7 CPOs. Assisted by officers from District 8 and the Central Region, teams of CPOs have been focusing on striped bass enforcement along the Raritan bayshore and Raritan River where they have been encountering many anglers taking advantage of the excellent striped bass fishing opportunity. This targeted enforcement effort has resulted in over sixty summonses issued for possession of undersized and/or over limit striped bass, two summonses issued for interference with the duties of a CPO, and five summonses issued for various boating safety violations. Additional summonses for failure to obtain a valid saltwater registry have also been issued. In one notable case, CPO Henderson and Lt. Scott encountered two men that launched a small boat under the GSP bridge in Woodbridge, Middlesex County. Working off information received from a complainant, the CPOs were able to set up surveillance of the launch site and when the fishermen returned the officers were able to inspect the two men. Upon inspection, the men were found to be in possession of twenty-one undersized striped bass measuring from 13 inches to approximately 26 inches. The men were issued summonses totaling over $4000.00 in monetary penalties and their court case is scheduled for early May. Another notable case involved a man on a kayak. CPO Woerner inspected the fisherman as he was pulling his kayak up a small beach in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, and found the man in possession of sixteen striped bass. All but one fish was undersize. Summonses for over limit and undersized striped bass were issued totaling almost $3000.00 in monetary penalties.

glad to see they UPED the fines per fish.
185 bucks a fish may make more people play by the rules.
But betting gross violators like that don't care

Can't believe they caught people that weren't signed up for the Saltwater Registry.

Hopefully there will be no plea bargaining and the fines will stick.
I was recently told that in NY the DEC police are using drones as another enforcement tool. Not sure if there is any truth in that but if it helps nail dishonest fisherman then it sounds like a great idea.

Went out opening day sea bass on the Paramount. As we were leaving the inlet, I saw about 10-12 anglers with waders fishing for stripers. As we’re moving, I notice a guy catch a striper and immediately toss it behind him into the tall grass over the sand. Must have been 23-24”. Wish I was a DEP Officer!

Should have called one .
Takes less time than it did for you to post it here .
They may not get to every caller , but it will have them watching the area in the future

Two weeks ago as soon as my boat touched the Atlantic Highlands Municipal dock a conservation officer was headed my way. He asked if he could board and I said have at it. He asked if we caught anything and I showed him the 3 bled fish in my deck box. My large cooler only full of ice was in the cabin and I wanted him to inspect that also. After he leaned in I opened the lid for his inspection. He said all looks good. That is when I asked him to grab the other handle to help me get it out of the cabin. :D
Very nice fellow and I hope he catches his limit of law breakers out there.

Here are some more striped bass enforcement highlights.

CPOs Driscoll, Anderson, Holmes, Hausamann, and Mascio inspected a total of eighty-eight fishermen and issued twenty-three summonses for the following violations: three summonses for possession of three undersize stripers, seven summonses for possession of two undersized stripers, seven summonses for possession of one undersized striper, three summonses for possession of two striped bass over the daily limit, and one summons for possession of one striped bass over the daily limit. CPOs Riviello, Mascio and Lt. Martiak conducted a two-night saturation patrol on the Raritan River from Edison to New Brunswick focusing on striped bass anglers. Four summonses were issued for undersized striped bass and one littering summons was issued. CPOs Riviello and Mascio extended their patrol and assisted the MRO officers with surveillance of striped bass fishermen in Perth Amboy which resulted in additional undersized striped bass summonses.

Good. Keep patrolling the raritan river. I see people keeping short everything off of rt 18. Non-natives fishing bait on surf rods and using nets to catch and keep river herring. They need to be dealt with pronto!
