Joined my buddy Cliff to fish the NY FLuke opener on Saturday in the rain. Unfortunately his boat was still in dry-dock so we had to fish from shore - no problem. There's a new park/pier under the second Wantaugh Bridge that we had to ourselves Saturday morning. It allows you to fish both East & West of the bridge and it's a short cast to the channel. Overhang from bridge kept us dry :) The water was cold (51*) but the Fluke (& Sea Robins) were there. WE each had 5 or so shorts and I actually got one keeper (released). Fish came up ice cold. NY regs are 4 Fluke @ 19".
It was great to finally have 2019 pullage on my spinner. I usually fish Bait early in the season but was pleasantly surprised to have success with Gulp since we had no bait. I have no issue with NY spot-burning so here you go : https://www.thefisherman.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=feature.display&feature_ID=802&ParentCat=8. Wish I could find a similar place like this in NJ for shore-based Fluking, if you know of any and need a partner - lemme know.
In any case I was encouraged by the early cold-water bite on Gulp. Hopefully 2019 NJ fluking will be a gr8 season for all of us !
