My Buddy caught a 31 lb Jack Crevalle on a Fish Poison Rod Kevin made for me around 2002. This rod, still in great shape, is normally my yellowtail/ mutton snapper rod. I think this boy is going to be pretty sore tomorrow! This is the largest Jack weighed in at my marina so far this year. The King mackerel look small next to the Jack.

That’s great! Looks like a medium heavy conventional, which we recommend for a lot of specific uses and and a good around rod in general. 2002! Glad to hear it is going strong. That must have been some fight! Nice fish!! Please congratulate your friend for us.

Rich,
Thanks for the rod pics. Built seventeen years ago and hitting its stride! How deep and how much weight do you typically fish with it down your way?

If we are drifting for mahi or kings, no weight, eight foot leader and a dead sardine or a live gog or threadfin herring. If we are bottom fishing while drifting, then I'll put on a 1 ounce egg sinker, a swivel to hold the sinker and then the leader and bait. If we are seriously fishing mutton snappers we can use up to 16 ounce sinkers and 100 foot leaders. Big mutton snappers don't get big by being dumb, we really have to sneak up on them with long leaders.
