Was down there a few winters ago... Wanted to fish, made a reservation and was blown out 4 days in a row... I guess making my reservation under the name Murray was a big mistake :D

All kidding aside, lots boats down there and they typically fish open, you make your reservation you show up and they pair you up with others.

Seems to me the best way to make the reservation is through whatever resort you're saying at... The DR in general and all the businesses down there, live and die on online reviews so the resort is not going to steer you wrong by putting you on an old beat up Conk boat (although that would be fine for you) and risk getting a bad review...

I talked to a few people who managed to get out, they trolled and had some nice (wait for it.........) MAHI!!

Not sure what time of year you're going but generally the winds are pretty stiff down there most of the winter and let up in April.

Have fun Murr and hope you're able to get our while your down there...

What Gerry said, count on getting blown out most days. The ocean outside the reef is angry in winter.

Wedding is in May of 2020. Is there any beach fishing down there?

Now that you mention it, I have never seen anyone fishing from the beach and I have been there many times. Maybe it’s because of the resorts ? You do see locals fishing from Panga’s.

My buddy goes there every winter and fishes the shore. Brings 7 foot pole not unlike you would use inshore in NJ with a 3000 size reel. 12 inch steel leaders and small Hopkins or large Johnson minnows to catch small barracuda.
He questions the sea worthiness of many of the charter boats down there.

If you are talking offshore, Paco Vela is the go to guy.... marlin, tuna, and swords.
