Explored some new water with a friend on Sunday and it payed off. Got a bunch of big wild browns in the first stretch we hit. The second stretch ended up being shallow and featureless, so we can scratch that off the spot list. All in all a great day.

Monday I headed out in search of some winter pike. I ended up catching this beast on a lure. Then, I decided to hit a trout hole on the way home and caught one decent wild brown.

As I said on Facebook, I haven't caught a pike before and that has to change! Would love to get out there with you sometime and learn about them! Congrats on the awesome mixed bags, those browns are gorgeous too

Great fish. Nothing worse than a flat, featureless, shallow stretch of river... well maybe not as worse than a beautiful stretch all behind posted signs :D

Been a while since I've seen a photo of a big, muddy pike. Well done!
That is just flat out AWESOME!

Those are very odd markings for a pure bred pike!.. Looks to me like a Pike/Pickerel hybrid.. they are not an everyday catch, but are pretty common where both species co exist.. Pike spots are generally much more uniform.. that fish you are holding looks like a world record monster pickerel, with some pike like markings mixed in.. I could be wrong of course, but I say its a hybrid.. They get quite large... Here are some pictures of pure strain pike from Pa just to compare.. bob

Fishing with mud pies again?

I have seen a couple pics this year of pike with that chain pattern. Do the pike reproduce in our waters? Obviously the pickerel do so it could be a female pickerel and a male pike? Thoughts
Champlain has them but they look more like pickerel with pike spotting

There have been reports of baby pike in the Passaic and what appear to be pickerel/pike hybrids.
