Hello all, heading down to Marathon in July with the family. Looking to fish inshore with the kids, so want some good action for them. Any recommendations as far as guides go? Also will we be affected by the red tide is it that far south?
What fish are around in that month?mahi, grouper etc.
Thank you for any input given.
JC
My family went to Marathon a few years ago in late July. We rented a boat for 4 days which was the best move. Fished every morning either on the reef or the bridges. Caught all kinds of fish, yellowtail snappers and some grouper on the reefs. The bridges were also very good we hooked up with a few big ass sharks at the bridges and gave the tarpon a shot but there weren't many around. We did hook up a couple off the dock where we were staying at night. Having the boat gave us the opportunity to cruise around during the day and check out the different areas go to lunch snorkel the reef just awesome. Price that Charter compared to a boat, you may not catch as many fish but a couple of days with your our boat is great.

Capt Jack Carlson - Two Conchs Charters
Expensive but very, very good.
Best day with Jack, three of us C&R 19 Sails. Started slow trolling livies then we were casting live pilchards on 20lb spinners.

JC speaking from experince and I am talking about having a brother who owned and ran charter boats in Hawks Cay for over 25 years and myself being here (presently hiding in Marathon from the cold) and overseeing his business, everyone has good pointers and I have done just about all, renting a boat is great you can do what and when you want. Your coming down in July its gonna be HOT so a charter may restrict you on when it will be cooler, with a rental you can catch Yellowtails and some Groupers on Sombrero Reef all day, sharks around the bridges, Tarpon usually are lazy unless its early morning. You dont have to rent a boat for a whole week you can fish off of the road side areas in the shade. If you want to charter a boat I highly recomend Silver Fox Charters he is by far one of the best guides for reef fishing. If you have questions feel free to reach out and I should be able to help you out..

If you want to beat the heat and you’re there around the full moon, do a night trip for mangrove snapper.
