Fishing for or taking Alewife and blueback herring is prohibited. I used to enjoy going once in a while.

Atlantic herring migrate the east coast in huge numbers
Not the same fish

I know the refs are strict for the Delaware river
But those are not same species

same family- different fish.. Bluebacks are anadromous fish much like a Shad, that go into fresh water to spawn while Atlantic Herring or "Sea Herring" spawn in coastal waters and don't venture into fresh water,,, Bluebacks seem to be more common in big river sytems such as the Hudson and Delaware Rivers.
If I were still living at the Jersey shore, I would fish the Manasquan Inlet with small jigs or a sibiki rig this time of year.. We used to catch various Herring like fish there some of them pretty good size.. I could be mistaken but I thought they were Hickory Shad... might have been some Sea Herring as wel,l as I do think they will go into salt water bays and estuaries... bob

While this hardly concerns rod/reel anglers...latest Atlantic herring benchmark assessment saw lowest recruitment ever recorded.

Will they intervene before this vital forage stock is officially "overfished"? I'm not holding my breath.

Sounds like bunker management
Both are the most important issue in our fishery

A game warden told me that he caught a guy with > 100 hickory shad over the limit at Shark River a few years ago. He also caught 2 guys at Point Pleasant with > 20 hickory shad over the limit. This year I saw 3 fishermen catch and keep over their limit of hickory shad in Manasquan Inlet on Sabiki rigs. The limit is only 6 now.
