Throughout the New Year, all of us at Hackensack Riverkeeper will work tirelessly to bring our river ever closer to the fishable, swimmable and livable reality it – and you – deserve. Our ongoing environmental advocacy, action, education and enforcement efforts are going to take on a greater importance in 2019 than they have in a very long time.

We have a fight on our hands. A big one. And we need your help to win it.

The U.S. subsidiary of the Mitsubishi Corporation thinks it can come into our
Meadowlands, give a laundry list of pie-in-the-sky promises to local politicians, and get the go-ahead to shoehorn a gas-fired power plant onto 15 acres of illegally-filled wetlands.

If built, the proposed North Bergen Liberty Generating project would produce electricity exclusively for New York City. New Jersey would get absolutely nothing from the project, unless you count the nearly three million metric tons of carbon dioxide (and other air pollution) the plant would spew each and every year.

To counter that unequal mix of assets and liabilities, the well-heeled developer and its stable of lawyers, “environmental consultants”, and PR hacks have been stuffing every mailbox in North Bergen with full-color, multi-page, bilingual propaganda extolling the proposal’s purported benefits to township residents. Each and every one shows the smiling face of Mayor (and State Senator) Nicholas Sacco – the plant’s unabashed
#1 cheerleader.

So, in addition to the Japanese company and its California-based subsidiary (with their near-bottomless pot of money) that want to compromise our wetlands and destroy our air quality with this plant, while sending 100% of its power to NYC, we also have to deal with strong-arm politics. Want proof?

To date, over half of neighboring Bergen County’s 70 municipalities (with both Democratic and Republican council majorities) have passed resolutions opposing the project, but not a single one in Hudson County has joined them. Why is that?

We have it on unimpeachable authority that at least one Mayor and Council were threatened with having all their town’s future county Open Space and state Green Acres grant applications denied. Of course, there isn’t a single official, legal or ethical way to make good on that threat. However…

Imagine you’re a member of the committee that reviews such applications and you get a late night phone call from the career politician whose patronage put you on that committee. Get the picture? Of course you do. That’s what we’re dealing with.

We need you to step up for us. Step up for the fight to STOP this assault on our river, the protected wetlands of the Meadowlands and the air quality of millions of people in Bergen and Hudson Counties. Help us finish 2018 strong and start 2019 even stronger!

This is our river – your river – and we’re not going away. Ever. We ended state-sanctioned wetlands destruction in the Meadowlands. We ended the sell-off of woodlands in the upper watershed. And we’ll send NBLG packing as well.
Call Gov. Murphy and voice you concern.

On the upside, there might be a world class winter fishery if they use river water for cooling and have a warm water discharge.... Lots of those around the country and guys love them...

If there is money to be made POS Murphy will be all for it.

There already is a very healthy striper population in the hacky and if a warm water discharge is plugged in there it'll only get better.
