Hi All, I need some advice from you reel experts.

I used Hoppe's No. 9 gun and reel oil on 2 of my reels last weekend before a blackfish trip. I put the rods & reels in the car overnight so I can just get out of the house quicker at the crack of dawn. Got on the Mimi rigged up and on the first stop I went to cast and the spool was much tighter than usual. I couldnt cast more than 10 feet and even with an 8 ounce sinker my line took 2x as long to go down.

Once the afternoon came around with temps in the mid 40s the reel loosened right up and I could cast normal distance again. Not sure if the oil found its way or if I used too much.

Am I using the wrong stuff? Should I have used grease instead of oil?

Check out my thread about "real magic" in the freshwater page. I just got a can for Christmas and apparently it works very well!

I spray my reels with Blaster Silicone spray lube, light lubricant that doesn't put any drag on the spool.

TW 25b, best stuff going. Military uses it on their equipment. Waterproof synthetic and not affected by heat or cold. Very light coating, slightly expensive, IMO worth it. Less is more....

oh, is THAT what that stuff is for?.. A reel lube.. of course!.

My wife handed me a bottle at breakfast with sweet smile a few days ago, and i put it on my pancakes.. It wasn't all that tasty, but those pancakes slid down fast. bob
