Went out on the modified 10-10 Gambler trip. Where have all the tuna gone?
We started out stopping by the bluefin grounds for some jigging. No joy. stopped by a couple of pots for a few mahi. Headed out to the hundred square and then headed south from there. Chunked butters, sardines, and live squid all night. Massive schools of large aggressive squid all night. there were a couple of sword pups caught & released. Lots of blue sharks. a couple of small Makos came by to laugh at us at night. we hit the pots in the morning for more mahi. My catch 4 blue sharks, half a dozen mahi and a small ling. at least the blue dogs were big and even pretended to be tuna a couple of times. Good boat, good crew, bad fishing. next time maybe???

I'm on the 10/24 36 hour. Hopefully the tuna come in by then.

Did anyone do any tilefishing?

See you next Wed....At least there weren't as many blue dogs...I had 8-10 on as did some others...think mahi is saving(?) the trip, kind of....remnants of Michael probably screwed everything up---we shall see...just bring your "A" game!!!!! and think positive.....

Damn, damn, damn. Well, at least my surf fishing skills are getting better. I can't bring myself to get out there when practically everyone is ZEROING out on tuna. Not a single tuna on many trips now. WTF! If I were scheduled in the few days, I would focus solely on Swords (and yes mahi if they pot hop). It's not a matter of the boat or captain, he's one of the best in the business who is left as many have quit tuna fishing all together. Hope you guys get them tomorrow!

There are not many Big Boats going for tuna anymore. You really can’t blame them. There
Used to be upwards of 10 boats heading out on weekends and 5/6 full
Every weekday. With the costs up and lack of fish, tough business models for
Sure. I always stay positive but the streak of poor
Reports continues. I did one small boat trip in July and was not good either. Looking forwards to summer 2019!

I am hoping the below report is true and that the tuna are starting to come into the canyons in the next week.

Capt. Joe from Sour Kraut Sportfishing from Leonardo heard unconfirmed rumors about tuna holding 30 miles beyond the canyons, in around 1,000 fathoms, he said. Previously, mahi mahi were the only good catches he heard about from offshore. They were migrating out, thinning out, from inshore. False albacore seemed to swarm all over the ocean inshore.

Theres been validity to these lines of thinking. Comparable pattern in the eastern canyons from a few sources. Fuel bladder :D

If the tuna are just 30 miles further out wouldn’t most big boats just go? Like 1.5 hrs each way more
To catch fish ? That is why those 36-48hr trips are so nice. Ability to gomtomwheee they are

I hear the same thing every year for the past 4 years that the tuna are holding just past the 1000 line. It’s bs IMO. Check the sat reports. The tuna charter capts have access to the comms reports—you don’t think they would run 30 miles east when some of them run further south than the Lindy out off PP/Brielle when the water/bite is good?

completely agree with john D and bcienrie - if the fish were at 1000 fathoms, then why wouldn't they run? i've been to the Wilmington before out of Belmar. that's about 120 miles. The only thing i can think of is that you would have to drift out that deep because no boat has enough anchor line in 1000 fathoms.

A non sponsor boat who is good and tuna fishes all the time, purchased their boat from someone in Barnegat - The boat in Barnegat was in business for years and because of Sandy (how it changed the inshore fishing down there), regulation changes, AND the LACK of tuna, they called it quits and sold the boat. His wife (mrs. eble) personally told me so a handful of years back.

Let's see how the other boats do. Also interesting no one has heard a peep in a few months from a very good 6 pack outfit - Canyon Runner.

You should see the amount of tuna tackle being sold on-line, staggering.

When was the last time you saw an eddy ( a nice big fat ball of organge/red) roll West from Hydrographers canyon and slide down the 100 line?

That was the last time we had classic fall tuna fishing and yes, it has been that long. It’s not a commercial overfishing issue, it’s just the way the Gulf Stream has run for over 5 years now.

Yeah, that's probably me. Stay tuned because I might be having a fire sale after my trip next week.
