Ran out of Manasquan this morning to take a shot at the Bluefin. Set a course to a spot about 40nm out but stopped 10 short when we came upon a big area of bait. We had whales shearwaters and couple of chicks but didn't mark any Tuna. Picked up and ran down to the spot I had plotted and it had very little bait but we marked a couple fish. Gave it a good try for some time to no avail. Trolled back up to the area that was loaded with bait and started marking some fish that were in the mix. We drilled that area hard the rest of the day and they weren't buying what we were selling. Never had a knock all day, but I'm looking forward to getting some payback. At least I know there are some around and there is alot of life out there.

If you don’t mind me asking...What were you pulling in your spread?

I don't mind . We trolled 9 rods, shutes and ballys on the long riggers and shotgun, spreader bars on the short riggers, a sumo Buddha on the port long flat the starboard long flat we mixed it up and tried a few things and cedar plug chains clipped down on both the short flatlines. The Tuna were not in contact with the bait balls today and the bait in the area we fished was very small. We marked fish but never saw them pushing the bait today.

Thanks for the report and encouraging to know there's life out there, past several years it's been slow. Sounds like you had all the right stuff though.

I've heard a few guys have been successful recently run and gun jig and popping but doesn't sound like you'd of had the opportunity since you didn't have a visual on them.

These inshore Bluefin can be really tricky but very exciting for us small boaters who don't want to commit to the canyons.
