Fluke/bottom fish primer?

Greetings all, Want to take my twin girls, 6 yrs old, out tomorrow for some fishing on Daddy’s day. Problem is never been fluking or much of a bottom fisherman. Can anybody give me a little bit of the how-what-where and when please?. I hear jigs with Killie/squid strip on them is good. Do I want to go to flats, drop offs, or rough bottoms? River, Bay, ocean?

Bait was been working pretty good. Using spearing and killies. I would just set up a normal bait rig. Nothing special just a plain hook tied to a 3 foot piece of leader to a 3-way swivel. Attach the weight and tie to the main line. Then put a killie on or spearing and drop to the bottom and drift along. Can also add a piece of Gulp. 4 or 5in swimming mullet or 6in grub. Colors change day to day but a safe bet is always Chart, White, or if in the bay i have been doing very good with New Penny 6in grub. Where about are you going to sail from?? Lots of action in raritan bay. Fish the channels or some skinny water on the flats. Work around some mussel beds or rocks.

Now all i usually do is jig. Nothing special about the rig. Jig on bottom tied with a surgeons loop, then go up about 10 - 12in and do a dropper loop, then attach to the main line. I use a albright knot but you can always use terminal tackle like a swivel. Then put Gulp on the jig and teaser and can sweeten the deal with some meat on there as well. Then just keep the jig moving.

Take a trip right up the Navesink west side of the oceanic bridge. Have heard very good reports of quality fish in the river. Killies or small gulp on a regular rig or bucktail are all producing well.
