toms river

Well was unable to make the run north today , so tried the toms river . I have never fished here before. I have to say ,has some very nice holes, water was clear, cedar colored . fished my way up stream maybe 1/2 mile .Very hard casting ,but if you take your time it can be enjoyable. long story sorry . no fish . but felt it was worth checking out. would anyone know if old mine rd. is open ? up north . thanks

Shucker fished there a few times and did well. Yes, concentrate on the deep holes, this time of year it would be low and slow. Would like to see more photos posted from this area.

I plan to fish it again . just wonder if i am wasting my time this time of year . its hard to fish a spot thats very hard to fish , not even knowing if there are fish in the stream . cool looking stream

It's never a waste of time. Hard to fish streams can make you a better angler.

The toms is one tuff nut to crack, I usually fish the TCA area and consider it a great day to nab 1-3 fish. The river offers very little room to cast, briar bush banks, numerous jig eating blowdowns, posted signs, and tea colored water.But this is the only trout stream near me so I'm stuck with it.Most of the trout I catch from there were in the tails of holes and near undercut banks the most productive lure is a 1/32 oz natural bucktail.

Thanks for the intel. do you still fish it , this time of year? I plan on heading up north next week . there are a ton of streams up there that i love to learn.

I'll fish it if I need a quick fix...northern streams are way better but the ride from Manahawkin is a killer for me.....Are you local?

live in manasquan, fish the manasquan river ,know that one like the back of my hand . can't beat fishin up north . planing to shoot up north next week ,or maybe this weekend . hope old mine rd. open

What are streams down in south Jersey like? Haven't really ever been to one. I'm not sure what makes northern streams better, like technically.

From my understanding it's because south Jersey is flatter in elevation/terrain so rivers don't flow like northern ones do?

Never fished them either but have fished a number of lakes and ponds down south jersey. I think two of the primary differences are riverbed and substrate make up. Flatter, too. Significant mud and sand bottoms combined with various types of predominant sedge and conifers alter water color/clarity giving a lot of water bodies--still and moving--the cedar water tinge. Unless of course it's a quarry.

The lore and mystery of elusive sea runs in southern rivers and streams always seemed kept my interests but I've never attempted... those who have/do and experience success are often tight lipped...with good reason!

Talk to Jersey Shore Trout Unlimited, they won't even recognize that these rivers even exist.

streams down here are fun to fish , very challenging to say the least. I find after about the third week of may the ticks just get to bad an I stop .
