Hi All, I fish 60lb powerpro with 50# mono topshot on a graphite rod with a saltist 30 star drag. I am thinking of also bringing one of my fiberglass rods with straight mono on another saltist 30 star drag on my next few trips to end the season.
I hear there are some advantages to mono in a swell and water under 50 foot but would like some advice on if this really helps picking the right bite and keeping a belly in the line. Also what lb test is recommended? I’m thinking 40# mono but need advice.

Is this a silly question or does no one use straight mono anymore?

There’s are a few but not many. Only advantage I can see is with less sensitivity you’ll be setting the hook on better bites since you won’t be feeling the others.

I don't use straight mono, I use braid and top shot. However, I do prefer a longer top shot than I see most people use. I use around 15'-25' of top shot depending on how deep I think I will be fishing. So, I kind of have a cross between braid and mono. I do this because I like the extra give in the mono as the braid obviously has none. I also flip out and fish with a belly in the line. So, you can achieve what your trying to do without giving up as much sensitivity if you use a longer top shot/braid combo. I hope this helps.

I use 50 lb mono up until fishing in over 85 ft. You feel the good bites & don't swing at bergals. Also feel the tog feel less resistance on the line because of the stretch

I am by no means a great black fishermen but I have been fishin straight mono for about 5 years. Because of the stretch I feel like the blackfish really hit harder. These fish love to mess around with the bait and because they feel little to no resistance they hit very aggressive... a lot of times when I fish with friends who use braid they get fish that hit once or twice really hard, But don’t fully commit. I hear them say, “how did I miss that it nearly took the rod out of my hands” I find this happens a lot less to me..
now with all that said if I’m jigging I use braid and over 90 foot I fish braid. And I still suck!!

Yea I feel like I can feel everything with the braid which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it's good to have both setups for different conditions.

I just spooled 40# mono on my secondary rod. I am going to use the mono on a fiberglass rod and my other rod is composite with braid and top shot for the deeper drops.
I don't know if I ever fished mono for blackfish before so it should be an interesting adjustment.

I’ve seen plenty of the best toggers using mono. I have also seen mono catch fish in screaming currents and braid not get a bite. I fish braid but going to be setting up and rod with mono.

I've fished mono sparingly over the last few seasons so take this for what it's worth. From the first fish I hooked on mono I realized it feels like the fish will not come off. With all that give and stretch I just feel so confident I'll get that fish up without the hook pulling. If I were you I would consider the mono on the stiffer rod since you have all the give with the line, and the braid on the glass rod that way you have the forgiveness of the rod to counteract the lack of stretch of the braid. Just a thought. That being said I pretty much almost always fish braid especially over 50 or so feet of water but uusually have a mono rod with me, and I use either 30 or 40lb.

So you are recommending I switch the reels on the rods? Braid on Glass and mono of Composite?

For the mono, for me, I would want the more sensitive rod. That's not saying one way is the right way, but that's how I like to fish the mono. I've seen plenty of guys fish mono on glass rods and do great. I have, and I have also seen plenty of guys fish with braid on a composite and do great as well. My saltist and my lami composite have caught countless blackfish. By putting the mono on the composite and the braid on the glass rod I think gives you the best compromise. Now looks like we'll be fishing deep anyway so I'd leave the mono at home and stick with the braid with a nice 25ft topshot
