I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and looking forward to the new year.
Traditionally I have used 40-50lb mono leader for my blackfish snells, but I am hearing a lot of people suggesting Fluoro for the snells. I was always under the impression that blackfish are not leader shy but I have seen some guys with fluoro producing a little better recently and swearing by it.
I do use Seaguar Fluoro in 60lb & 80lb on tuna and pelagics but what is the brand of choice for blackfish? PLEASE VOTE IN THE POLL ON TOP OF PAGE.

It's stiffer and more abrasion resistant vs mono. Those are the primary differences. Oh...and it's like 4x more expensive lol.

The cheapest floro you can buy and red hooks

2 reasons to use floro in my opinion... 1) It resists abrasion better then mono and 2) it's stiffer which keeps your hooks away from and riding back on your line and tangling in it.
Having said this, I use floro on the hook leaders only and my shock leader is regular mono. Some people are using 60, I'm using 50...

Yea I always use mono on my top shot. I think 50lb. is the sweet spot for me but that's interesting about the stiffness. So technically flouro would be better for snafu rigs too?
Does brand really matter?

Yes better for snafu and sliders in my opinion...
Not sure if brand really matters all that much, never really paid that much attention to it.

Contrary to popular belief fluoro is not always more abrasion resistant then mono . Definitely not so with hard type monos , and true hard type leader material is stiffer then ordinary mono and stiffer then fluoro .
Using it for tog may make a difference but not necessary in my opinion .
Good quality leader material, or fluoro ur choice . I use both but oddly enough most of my big fish taken on standard leader material

what it may be coming to dude, population is in trouble, every year fewer & fewer 2-6lb fish.either 10inches or 10lbs this year is not a sign of a healthy population.

Tell me about it man. Tough Tough season! That's the only reason why I'm considering using Fluoro otherwise I would just stick to my ways.

I've seen this stuff but never used it. Does the color matter? I feel like I would fall into the clear line purist category haha.

We are discussing invisible leaders for a fish that bites barnacles off of tangled cables on shipwrecks... Years ago, blackfish hooks were lashed onto tarred cuttyhunk line,.. old timers used that before mono became popular decades ago and caught a lot more blackfish than we ever will today ... If tog nowadays have to be caught with such stealth, it can only be because of intense pressure on them .. bob

Most people aren’t using it because of its low vis quality, they use it because it’s stiffer then regular mono and more abrasion resistant Bob..

I worked with the original importers of fluoro, carbon product in early eighties , for sure it is less vivisible then mono due to its makeup .
It's stiffer then ordinary mono that's for sure , but not as stiff as a good hard type mono or perlon type material
Now I believe the biggest issue may be its abrasion qualities when compared to mono .
It's been my expierance its not more abrasion resistant then a good quality mono & no where near as abrasion proof as hard types of mono !
It's memory however is easily correctable by simply stretching material which is a redeeming factor for leader material .
One thing that is also a quality of fluoro is apparently it's self life , I redularly use ten / twenty year old product that I acquired when we sold product prior to,spooling, for sale , eye opener it tests as good if not better than new product off shelf today . So I'm set , in this respect its like a braid spool life very lengthy that's foe sure

Very interesting to know about the shelf life but unfortunatley I'll get snagged before I can think twice about using the same snelled hook on another trip. :D
