I hope if it was 59lb, it was released!!!!

Released for what? Crab food? I hope it gets eaten, any eggs from an old cow like that might be starting to go sour.

Striped Bass will successfully spawn until they die. Size has nothing to do with it. The species has the ability to grow to at least 80 lbs...Not all have the genes to make it to that size, but its certainly possible.

With that being said there is nothing wrong with a person keeping the fish of a lifetime. I would most likely do the same...If it was a surf caught fish I would keep and mount it without question.

Congratulations on a great fish!

nice fish , day to remember forever .

The number of eggs produced by female striped bass is directly related to the size of its body. A 12 - pound female may produce about 850,000 eggs and a 55 - pound female about 4,200,000 eggs.

Keeping a fish of that size doesn't make sense to me for the simple reason that larger fish, which usually have to be steaked are of a different quality of fish opposed to the smaller ones. Personally, I have too much respect for the Striper fishery.... Black fish is another fish that deserves respect and is slow growing. Already released several of those in the double digit range. Everyone has different thoughts on keeping large fish and that is okay. Congratulations on the catch.

Great fish Mark, more importantly a great accomplishment for a
Veteran! In circumstances like this, fish of a lifetime, someone
That fought for his country, and a father-Son moment you are
More than warranted. There are always going to be naysayers/haters
Pay them no mind, you have more supporters than haters on a fish
of a lifetime!

Great catch right there, but those big ones do taste like crap. I kept a 52lb bass this spring (my largest) and said never again.

It's possible to sincerely congratulate someone for catching a fish of a lifetime, and bemoan its demise at the same time.

And area fishermen take maybe 200 per day for 60 days in spring and fall - thats 12000.

That means that for the whole year, we kill 1.5% of what one 12 lb female can produce.

Cook that fish - they'll make more, dont worry.

Why not just say congrats and leave it at that? Maybe next time the guy doesn’t share or someone else gets turned off from sharing.

less than 1% of those eggs will hatch and make it six months.

Or maybe someone shares the release of a trophy fish. If you're sharing for accolades on the internet, releasing a big fish will get way more "likes."

less than 1% of those eggs will hatch and make it six months. I was waiting for that... so all it takes is 100 small fish to breed the fish we kill.

have not spent much time trying to calculate how many bass are killed each year in NJ so I can't say if your numbers are accurate . However, not every 12 lb bass is a female. You also need the addition of male bass to fertilize the eggs of those 100 females . I'm not an expert, but I do not think there is an easy way to determine if a bass is male or female when they are under 25 lbs. That's why some folks go nuts about large hauls of fish over say 30 lbs.

Back to page 1, I'm happy for the angler. I would most likely keep this fish as well. I have absolutely no problem with it....would be a hell of an addition to the wall in the man cave.

I wonder how many of the sportsman commenting on releasing a trophy, would pass on the 14 pointer to shoot the spike? That's right, none of the hypocrytes. Congratulations on an envious catch!!

Well that summed that up.
Lock this thread and carry on. What one decides to do with his or her legally caught fish is up to them.

Congrats on a fish of a lifetime.
