View Full Version : Revised Sea Bass in Feb Poll

Sorry about the false start in the initial post... It's been brought to my attention there are other potential options so lets start this over again...
For those of you who didn't read the first post it looks like there might be an option to open Sea Bass during February... This however could require changing the season at other times which we've had before....
So the question becomes would you change the measures or season in other times of the year to have February. So give up some days in Spring, Summer or Fall/Late Fall or perhaps a 1/2 increase in size making it 13 inches and keep the current season intact...
So please weigh in on this revised poll

In my opinion a February season would not only benefit some of our local charter and party boats but give people an opportunity to catch some of the largest sea bass of their lives. As we all know February is a very difficult time to fish the offshore wrecks. So the amount of trips that would be happening at that time of year would probably be very limited. And the amount of fish caught during those trips would be offset if our officials would enforce the current laws and keep out of state charter and party boat from fishing in New Jersey waters while our season is still closed.

Remember back a few years ago when we gave up one fluke to get the size limit 1/2 inch smaller? How is that working out for us now?
Give up nothing!

I voted first option. Can’t believe people voted to raise it 1/2 inch? Once you give that up you’ll never get it back.
...and a question....IF they open up Feb, hypothetically we have 28 days of fishing. Say we only have 15 days of good weather to fish in the month. Does the gov look at it as 15 days of the season used or they consider we fished all 28 days? If they look at the month as a whole regardless of what we are able to fish we are only screwing ourselves in the worst weather month of the year.

Last year the late season was 13", and we got the shorter size back for this year.

Pipedream. Keep it closed in Feb so we DONT lose in the Spring. Thats the reality factor added in. Ridiculous to open for a couple of boats and the rest lose a month or more in the summer??? You know thats the game that will be played. As far as those *******s are concerned numbers will be based on a full month of fishing they are too stupid to know anything else.
How many trips you actually think will sail in February dead of winter? Don’t give up anything and don’t bother opening it for February.

At tonight's JCAA meeting our member clubs unanimously voted to oppose the opening of sea bass season in February at the cost of losing any days during the regular seasons. We did not discuss options involving raising the size limit or reducing the bag limit.
Personally, I don't care about February. I don't want to lose any days from the main seasons. Even if we went to 13", which I am in favor of, I would prefer to have more days added to the regular seasons rather than opening it in the winter.

Sea bass biomass is well over 200% of its sustainable level so we should not loose any of the states quota.
In Florida, boats can fish in federal waters, catch what ever the federal limits allows, and transit back through state waters back to their port (as long as fishing rods are stowed and the boat does not stop) without any penalties regardless of the state regulations. This is allowed and controlled by their state regulatory agency. Why can't we pressure the NJ DEP to allow us to do the same? The impact on the industry would be nothing but positive.

as much as its not fair to cut a few days, to have the offshore fishery again in winter to me is well worth it. Its a lot of fun catching seabass that big. The added bonus to me is that in theory it should take some of the pressure off the blackfish, since in February that is all we can fish for in Feb

after allot of digging and fact finding i too think we should go after the february
sea bass.i made some phone calls and did some research and we should take what is being given.we all know this is a broken system and needs a complete overhaul.we know from past seasons things can be taken away without warning.
i feel if we have this in opportunity to fish for the sea bass in february then we should take it as no one knows what will happen in the spring anyway.i say yes to sea bass in february and see what goes on from there.

This would NEVER work...there is too much logic involved!

If you raise the keeper size limit you will have a increased death rate because of the deep water culling.

Looks like NY elected not to open up Sea Bass in Feb. It also appears that the NY MRIP landing estimates for Fluke are lower which means there might be a chance for them to liberalize their regulations next year...

and...don't forget...EVERY fish that goes back is DEAD in February!
We need a sea bass season all summer because of the lack of keeper fluke caught. This would benefit party and charter boats. It entices more people to spend some money.

They consider you got the days, if you use them or not....It just happened to us this season with Fluke. After they took 24 days away, we lost 14 days due to weather.......NO REFUNDS! Go up 1/2 and you will NEVER get it back!
