U.S. Newspaper Circulation Falls 10%

The two-decade erosion in newspaper circulation is looking more like an avalanche, with figures released Monday showing weekday sales down more than 10 percent since last year, depressed by rising Internet readership, price increases, the recession and papers intentionally shedding unprofitable circulation.
In the six months ended Sept. 30, sales fell by 10.6 percent on weekdays and 7.5 percent on Sundays, from the period a year earlier, for several hundred papers reporting to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. That means that the industry sold about 44 million copies a day — fewer than at any time since the 1940s.

Like newspapers, magazines have been struggling with declining advertising revenue as readers increasingly go online for news and entertainment. In the second quarter, magazines had 8.2 percent fewer ad pages, the Publishers Information Bureau reported.
In contrast to the declining newspapers and magazines circulation, NJFishing.com has had a fantastic growth spurt since we came on the scene is 1997. In 2000 we started tracking our web site traffic. - Fishing information on the Internet is free
- It’s convenient
- It’s not last week or yesterday’s news
- You don’t have to wrap and recycle the Internet every week
Besides declining circulations, newspaper and magazine advertising has another problem… It’s very expensive and it produces very little results. Ask yourself this question. When is the last time one of your customers said they found out about you through a magazine or newspaper ad?
The bottom line is if you are spending any money advertising your fishing business in the newspaper or magazine, your are wasting your money.
